WhatsApp will eventually include payment options to commercialize the feature for creators who intend to utilize it.

According to the company, privacy is also important. The admin information for a channel is not shared, and it only keeps 30 days of history. Administrators can also restrict followers from screenshotting or forwarding messages. Although channels are not end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp has stated that it is investigating the possibility for non-profits, health groups, and other privacy-sensitive organizations.

Channels is essentially a knockoff of the same-named feature on competitor messaging software Telegram. Meta debuted Broadcast Channels on Instagram earlier this year, allowing creators to stream information to their followers’ inboxes in the same way that WhatsApp users will be able to do. The feature is similar to a newsletter, and it may have been termed a Newsletter while under development (although the latter may have arrived later as a different feature).

WhatsApp has grown much beyond its initial function as a simple chat service.
